THE PEPTIDOME: A TREASURE TROVE OF NOVEL PEPTIDE DRUGS
Bioactive peptides are pervasive across the tree of life, playing key roles in the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous, and immune system. Antimicrobial peptides, natural occurring antibiotics, are of special interest in the race to fight multi-drug resistant pathogens. To study bioactive peptides, peptidomics is an emerging field in mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics. That said, proteomics experimental protocols and computational tools are mainly conceived to explore proteomes, but not the inherent peptidome. The overarching objective of my lab is to devise computational tools and experimental protocols to facilitate peptidomic research.
